I've never even heard of a euphonium? My education is accounting with my CPA. Though I took private voice lessons throughout college, I chose not to minor in music thinking it would take too much time and I really wanted to finish in 4 years. I spent 7 years as an accountant. For the past 5 years, I've been a SAHM and P/T director to 3 musical groups at my church. A job I get a small stipend for but would do for free. I love it and am wishing I'd gotten some more education in music. I really should've paid more attention to my theory during 10 yrs of piano lessons, too.

What an awesome accounting of things. I go back to my high school website every now and then and see the people who I watched grow and learn, how I had them pegged one way or another, actually turn into that person, or completely surprise me and become something completely different. Odd how it seems the major limitations in our lives usually turn out to be ourselves.

Like Jacolily, I'd never heard of a euphonium! What a wonderful and eye-opening experience, though. My 20th was this year too - I missed it though. But I've been having a similar kind of experience reconnecting with a bunch of my former college English major friends. We all worked at the campus newspaper together and were all SURE we were going to be novelists or top-notch journalists, and most of our lives have taken us in very different but equally amazing directions. Life is a beautiful thing, isn't it?

This is such a great post. I love your ability to look back -- with nostalgia and fondness and integrate that in with the realities of current life. I have a niece that's a sophomore in college, and she thinks she has her whole life path figured out. I keep trying to tell her that a) she can't and b) she doesn't want to!

There's a song by the band The Born Again Floozies called "I Used to Play the Euphonium".
Wow, you must survive on very little sleep!

I know what it's like to balance job and family. I was able to do that, but I never enjoyed it because one or the other just HAD to take the short end of the stick on occasion; therefore, for me, adding writing to that mix would have been IMPOSSIBLE! I'm so glad (and a little bit jealous) that you're able to keep up all three.

A while back, I read a truly magical, inspiring novel that centered around the life of a true musical "wunder kind." His brother was also musically inclined -- as was the entire family, really, to varying degrees. It was very interesting how the novelist approached the relationship between the two musical brothers, and especially interesting was his exploration of the relationships of others at Julliard to the hero/prodigy -- for any who don't know, "prodigy" is what "wunder kind" means.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant to combine the theme of music with the issue of racism/civil rights issues. If you have any spare time to read these days, the novel is called The Time of Our Singing. It was written by Richard Powers, my favorite novelist ever. He's a true genius who's chosen the generalist's passion for learning as much as he can about every aspect of life rather than choosing to be locked into any one specialty.

Powers's writing inspires one to stretch one's mind almost beyond its limits; his range of subject matter is broad. If you're not up to reading about a musical prodigy & racism, maybe you would enjoy the shorter, but just as wonderful, Galatea 2.2, which is a Pygmalian story involving a human being's relationship to a very specialized computer.

Oddly enough, as with just a couple of other authors and very few people in general, Powers is one of a small percentage I would never accuse of valuing achievement over experience & expression, and I believe those values are what has paved the way of his achievement.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind thoughts. It was a lot of fun, but also very thought-provoking.

(Dear Z, since I went back to work I've been much more prone to crashing at night; can't stay up like I used to. Getting old. Oh well, beats the alternative.)

Must confess, haven't achieved much production of NEW writing since I went back to work, but have edited a piece here and there, and provided some crit to my wiki buds. Not gonna be able to do NaNoWriMo this year, alas, but am trying to get self to commit to a self-driven, milder version of it. We'll see.

Cheers.
